Graphics Cards no longer on Hardware Compatibility List for 8.
-
We have three Dell r720 with no dedicated hardware graphics, but do have the larger power supplies. Assuming network is as fast as possible, hoping the display of static pictures would speed up inside MS Remote Desktop Protocol sessions with the addition of dedicated GPUs? The GRID K2 is $81 on eBay. Then did some more reading which indicated the GRID K2 is better suited to speed up a single workstation like Qubes-OS XEN whereas the GRID K1 is better for multiple users. The use case is Windows RDP servers hosting 16 to 32 users, so not really sure which card is better suited for us. Not even sure we would we notice a difference?
The xensource hcl lists four GPU cards for the Dell r720:
.-
Nvidia Grid K1 and K2 as compatible but only with Citrix XenServer 7. Would these cards still likely work in XCP-NG 8+?
-
NVidia Tesla M10 and NVidia Tesla M60 are compatible with 7, 8, and even 8.1. These cards are much much more expensive, starting at $1400 used, so out of the question.

I bet the drivers are easier with AMD than NVIDIA. Is there one known to work well for this purpose for RDP, but simply not on the HCL? Any recommendations?

If you want to do vGPUs, it won't work on XCP-ng (due to some closed source code on Citrix side). GPU passthrough will work however.
AMD GPU will work even for vGPU.

AMD keeps things simpler for security and performance impact of spectre patches. AMD offers just as much performance in a simpler GPU package. AMD for CPU and AMD for GPU.
