I am a system and network integrator in the defense sector.
I have deployed the XCP-NG hypervisor for our tools (moving from ESXI 5.1 to XCP-NG 8.2 ). I have been working in IT for several years now and have previously used XenServer 6.5, so I'm not completely lost. As for virtualization technologies, I am agnostic (Proxmox, VMware, Hyper-V, etc.).

Are there any limitations or different behaviors when connecting an external hard drive of 4 TB or more via USB to the XCP-NG host (using a disk dock, for example)?

In my current usage scenario (at home, in this case), the goal is to connect the external hard drive to a virtual machine that will also serve as a NAS.

The disk is detected correctly at the host level with the 'lsblk' command, as well as with Xen commands and in the Xen Orchestra VUSB section. However, even when attached to the VM (running Debian 12), no device is recognized.

Is there any official documentation regarding VUSB, its associated limitations, and its usage context? I've come across various information about the USB part, but it remains somewhat unclear.

Pour ma part, je vais laisser le passthrough directement sur ma VM "NAS", car ça fonctionne bien ainsi. Je ne pense pas qu'il soit pertinent de corriger ce problème, étant donné que le passthrough fonctionne correctement.

@Davidj-0 Ah ! Merci pour ton retour, David. Tu le raccordes à une machine sous Linux ? Si oui, quelle distribution et quelle version du kernel utilises-tu ? Tu utilises un boîtier externe à 5 ou 10 emplacements j'imagine pour atteindre les 14to ?

Je pense faire un test ce soir, bien que le passthrough fonctionne déjà très bien actuellement

@olivierlambert : Je ne sais pas, c’est peut-être un problème d’émulation. Mais je préfère refaire un test pour en être sûr. (Peut-être lié à la distribution Linux ?)

Désolé si ma question n'était pas claire Je fais bien référence à un disque dur USB physique connecté directement à l'hyperviseur et attribué à une VM via VUSB.
Le problème que j'observe, c'est que les disques de plus de 2 To ne sont pas correctement reconnus dans ce scénario.
Pour contourner cette limitation, j'ai dû passer par un Passthrough PCI plutôt que d'utiliser VUSB, ce qui a permis à la VM de détecter et d'utiliser le disque sans souci.

J’ai remarqué que l’utilisation de VUSB pour connecter des périphériques de stockage de plus de 2 To n’est pas supportée.

Dans ce cas, l’utilisateur doit passer par un Passthrough PCI sur la machine virtuelle afin que le périphérique soit correctement détecté et utilisable.

J’ai dû appliquer cette méthode pour utiliser un disque dur externe Seagate Basic (5 To) à ma machine.

A little feedback regarding my problem that some may have in the future in the case of purchasing an external box which will be connected to an XCP-NG host.

It turns out that the Sabrent brand box that I bought will not work with XCP-NG, there would be quite a few basic problems. To see if with a more recent kernel in the next XCP version this resolves the problem or not.

I tried the bypass with a uas blacklist without success the box remains blacklisted :

touch /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-usb.conf
echo "blacklist uas" > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-usb.conf
reboot

But none with an old box (5 storage spaces in USB3) which is not black listed.

I will therefore keep this enclosure for another use with a machine having a more recent kernel (6.1) where this will not be an issue.
I will test it with a version of CentOS 7 with a kernel version close to the current one to see if I encounter the same issues.

Tested too, I can successfully attach the disk to the VM, but there are input/output problems.

I will see about putting a smaller capacity disk in the case (250 GB for example) knowing that the case is new
