XO CE migrate fails for WinServer 2019 VM - "Internal Error"
-
Hi, I have 2 hosts with the latest XCP (8.1.0). I do not use pools, so they are both standalone.
I am using XO Community Edition.I'm trying to migrate some VMs from one host to the other. I was able to migrate a small linux VM successfully, but when I tried to migrate a larger WS2019 VM, it would give me the error below. The migration starts and proceeds normally, but when it "completes" the VM is not moved and the error is in the logs. The VM is shut down, from inside windows.
I am able to successfully migrate the VM using XCP-ng Center. I just want to make sure that the error above isn't a sign of some deeper issue with my XO that will affect other things. (and I would like to use XO).
Here is the error log. It doesnt give much details, is there a way to get more information?
vm.migrate { "mapVdisSrs": { "5c6f3101-d882-424d-a9d6-2eab74d50580": "ca984ce3-ae6a-d8c5-6233-fa09c777d811" }, "mapVifsNetworks": { "fad8b914-3ae4-bba0-bf0c-e3899206b4a1": "e22975fa-a83d-d78e-f78c-c0ddf80fb510" }, "targetHost": "f118efb8-186f-4e6c-9ca6-79030eea35ef", "vm": "6a1d28d8-f30a-74e8-3ad9-9a1fe6b37e13" } { "code": 21, "data": { "objectId": "6a1d28d8-f30a-74e8-3ad9-9a1fe6b37e13", "code": "INTERNAL_ERROR" }, "message": "operation failed", "name": "XoError", "stack": "XoError: operation failed at factory (/opt/xen-orchestra/packages/xo-common/src/api-errors.js:21:32) at getXapi.migrateVm.catch.error (/opt/xen-orchestra/packages/xo-server/src/api/vm.js:508:15) at <anonymous> at process._tickCallback (internal/process/next_tick.js:189:7)"
Thanks!

Hi,
I already answered in your ticket. This
INTERNAL_ERROR
is very likely a message coming from your hosts. -
I didn't make a ticket, are you mixing me up with someone else?
What does "coming from my hosts" mean? Is there a way to fix it?
-
We had a similar ticket few hours ago, so I thought it was you
When you have a message in caps, it's not an error raised by Xen Orchestra but the host itself. Check
/var/log/xensource.log
on both origin and destination. -
Ok, thanks. Looking at the logs, on the destination I have:

My VM has some snapshots (taken with XO), would that cause problems with the migration? Why does it work in XCP-ng Center?
-
@Zevgeny said in XO CE migrate fails for WinServer 2019 VM - "Internal Error":
Why does it work in XCP-ng Center?
This is a good question It might be indeed related to snaphots. Maybe XCP-ng Center is managing this in a different way
How many snapshots do you have for this VM?
-
@olivierlambert Just 1 snapshot.
Previously we were using VirtualBox (we are just starting to move out of the cardboard and duct tape level of IT infra... ), and snapshots were terrifyingly scary in how often they break things.
Is this the case with XCP-NG? Should we avoid snapshots?
-
It might be just a missing param in some cases of snapshots for a live migration. Snapshots are the way to do many things in XCP-ng, and it works.
Is there a way to remove the snapshot, and test the migration for this VM (in XO)?
I'd like to understand the exact cases when XO can't migrate vs XCP-ng Center, so we could spot the difference.
-
@olivierlambert I finally got the thing to where I wanted after many hours, so maybe I'll make a copy of it and then try to migrate the copy.
-
@olivierlambert Hmm, I successfully moved the copy, took a snapshot, successfully moved it again.
Then I tried the original problem VM, and was able to move it as well. The problem VM was actively being used / run, so I guess things fixed themselves after its state changed? I have no idea.
Hopefully, it never happens again, sorry for the false alarm.
-
Hard to tell. If it happens again, try immediately to compare XO behavior with other clients to see if we can tell where is the problem
