"Pay for Premium or we corrupt your database backups"
-
Yeah, a bit aggressive of a title, but I'm looking for some confirmation that it's BS here.
Our company is strongly considering a move from a VMware setup to XCP-NG, it feels like a great match for us in many ways and VMware is becoming more and more uncomfortable. The Enterprise level looks great for us otherwise.
What I can't understand is why you'd put snapshotting the RAM with the backups into the Premium tier only? That's something I would expect to be included as standard in at the very least the Enterprise tier. Enterprises frequently have SQL databases. I know we do. $4000 extra a year to not corrupt our backups sounds a bit off.
What's the actual process for backing up SQL servers now, then - taking them down and then backing up?

Hi,
Indeed, it's a bit aggressive. There's no corruption without RAM enabled backup, because any VM with PV driver will be aware about the backup and we had 0 report of corrupted DB after restore since we started to do XO backup, back in 2015.
Also, if you get XCP-ng support + XO, we can create a bundle that worth it. I can assume you only have few hosts if you consider that the premium feature are too expensive?
Next time, if you want to discuss that, I encourage you to do it directly with our sales team instead of being aggressive because you don't understand how our product work on our public forums.

Well, tbh it wasn't really as seriously intended as all that but still; your promotional material about the feature makes it sound a lot like my headline, talking about how database restores may be corrupted if you don't get memory too as a reason why this is a great feature.
To quote from the product matrix; "Perform backup with RAM contents (avoid corruption for DB, quicker reboot, no context loss)"
I still personally feel it belongs in Enterprise. Hell, in any paid version, probably. It's something Enterprise could use. It's standard availability in the very cheapest VMware cluster options and has been for years (which is what we're currently running, but VMware is getting ever less viable for a smaller operation, which indeed we are). Just check the "Snapshot the virtual machine's memory" if you like and snap away.
Of course how you price and license is up to you, just saying that for me it seems like an odd thing to put as a value add, and literally write that it may corrupt databases if not available.

Some users prefer to backup with RAM because they have applications they don't want to take any risk with. Those are more demanding, and then ready to pay more for this.
Also, we are working on new pricing bundle (XCP-ng+XO), since in the end, there's no point on getting XO without XCP-ng. For that, we are creating specific packages for small clusters (3 hosts max) with a really interesting pricing (I can imagine you have 3 hosts max).
But all of that, we could have told you if you contacted our sales instead of ranting in our public forum.

@KimmoJ I wonder how much you pays to Vmware? + Probably you have to pay also to your backup software...
