      Hey guys,

I am interested in using XOSAN for my company's testing env but my boss needs some informations so I have a few questions for you bout XOSAN and I hope you will be able to provide any answers to those.

      1. is there any recommendation for using a separate hdd for host and separate hdd for XOSAN storage ? or maybe using the same phisical hdd for both may not affect the efficiency and performance ?

      2. Does XOSAN use cache layer on SSD and capacity on HDD/SSD (like VMWare vSAN does) ?

      3. How does the number of phisical drives in host/cluster node affect the XOSAN performance ?

      4. Is there a way to extend XOSAN storage by adding new phisical drives to the existing hosts/nodes instead of adding new hosts/nodes ?

Thanks in advance for any answers !

        Hi!

        1. This won't affect perfs a lot, the host itself doesn't use a lot of IOPS
        2. No, it's not really trivial with the current XOSAN technical "bricks" used
        3. It's not per disk but per SR (one SR used per node)
        4. You can grow it by adding node, not disks locally (that's a current limitation of XOSAN)

Also, now we got more knowledge on the dom0, we planned to make a new version of XOSAN in the future to remove XOSANv1 limitations, which are:

        • growing only with nodes, not by disks on the local node
        • limited 4k IOPS perfs
        • chicken/egg problem if you boot all your infrastructure at once (XOSAN VM must be up, so it might be needed to manually plug to storage)

Ok, so.. giving the fact that you cannot grow your XOSAN pool by adding disks locally..
so is it possible to create another XOSAN pool with those new local disks and being able to have two XOSAN pools simultaneously on the same nodes ?

Technically everything is possible (even adding disk) but not with the XOSAN UI.

If you want more flexibility, I suggest you wait for XOSANv2.
