We are looking at moving to Supermicro for a new server build and are having issues confirming card compatibility for hardware raid. What are the options? I don't see any Supermicro controllers listed on xen hardware compatibility.

This is what we were looking at. https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/accessories/addon/AOC-S3908L-H8IR_S3916L-H16IR.php

@gofm While the card may not be listed on an HCL, you could always get an HCL compatible card from another vendor and install it into your server.

I'm assuming you're looking at Supermicro chassis as well and thus looking to have a singular hardware vendor, correct?

@DustinB That is correct. That was the hope but not necessarily a requirement.

So I also have Supermicro chassis, and they work just fine, I also have shared storage for the bulk of our workloads, simply because it allows for easier migration between hosts within the same pool.

Of course, on-host storage is great for things that need to have the most IOPS that aren't shared, but you have to consider the migration will take longer.

In terms of HCL list, I haven't had any issues with my SM servers and cards.

@DustinB We will be using shared storage as well for all of our storage. We will only have a couple on board disk doing Raid 1 for XCP. Glad to hear you haven't had any issues. Did you have to load any outside drivers before install?

@gofm While the SM card is not directly on the Xen HCL, I'll guess it's basiclly the same card as the Avago/LSI MegaRAID 12G SAS PCIe SAS39xx on the HCL.

We've used multiple MegaRAID cards and they all worked just fine, so if thats the card you're looking at I think you're good.

Nope, with two disks (and no raid card) you would end up with a Software Raid 1, which comes native during the installation process.

You can also add an additional SR if you want using any additional disk (presented via your raid card)

Thanks everyone! I’ll let you know if we have any issues.
