      @olivierlambert

well i reinstall and it will work again for months, sometimes like to day until i reboot. I had my everything crossed but no such luck.

Normally (not an expert) you get reports of errored disks on the console display (writing over the console)

I don't seem to get any of that. i think i've changed the SSD in the past (long time ago) but due to same issue i'm sure.

i'll run some diags on disks and ram to be sure (as sure at those tests are)

      thanks, any other ideas?

This has happened time and time again but i normally just rebuild. this time i thought i would try to fix... with help.

my host get to this point of boot and then stops. the screen input is flashing but the keyboard becomes frozen (numlock won't turn off)

the 2nd picture is as far as it get in safemode boot.

I have tried to mount the volume to a live ubuntu but that failed. I will try again as i didn't have the pics so was half hearted as didn't know where to find the file. anyone got any ideas or seen it before?

VMs are backed up, i just want to know the issue as it's not the 1st time

      thanks in advance

    • RE: pool metadata backup

      @dannierothmann
indeed, but by definition the xsconsole only seems to state VM data not pool. I was more worried about it not being a full backup. but then in the same take, i like the idea of a VM only meta on XO.

I'm going to put this to bed next week. I'm going to export and compare backup files.

      place bets..

    • pool metadata backup

I use XOA to backup the pool metadata but little lost to the XCP host version.
it seems to suggest this is VM metadata only..... if so there once was a pool backup in xsconsole, has this been removed?

Also if the ability to backup the VM meta is here, why can't XOA backup just the VM meta instead of having to complete a full pool backup/restore?

    • RE: Accedentally set up a pool on an xcp-ng server

When you change network settings it asks if you want to push the name set to DNS or XCP (can't remember they direction), anyway this is your host DNS, when you set the network management in xsconsole you can get it renamed and then match the XCP name.

    • CPU Features

If you have an old pool and want to upgrade, attaching new hardware.
      You can get the following.

Once all the old servers are removed, how can you check that the CPUs are working at their best?

Oh no, I really like it coming from XEN.
      it should always be there....

I want to add a new server to the pool but i can't add without the same patch level.
Our main environment is behind 5 patches but i want to reboot them before adding the rest.

long story short, can i patch to X level so i can connect without having to down the current?

    • Windows Guest tools

I have a new 2022 server and i have tried to install the guest tools but all i get is the below. Just to add i have older servers but not running the tools. it's something i'm trying to fixup so this server is a test. The citrix tools work but i wanted to keep it XCP if possible.

      any idea's welcome.

    • RE: restoring META

@s-pam i'd say use them, always use the. Only a few KB of space and could be every handy. We have 3 servers in the pool so overlooked requirement for full pool recovery. (p.s we didn't fail, it's during DR testing it was flagged)

we had the backups on already and if this had been a real issue, would have saved a lot of bacon!!

turn it on ! (and check you can get it without a running XOA for quicker restore in full meltdown.)

    • RE: restoring META

it seems to be a missing option that XOA should have.
Just to restate and explain. (i'll use small UUIDs)

You have ONE host pool (silly start) UUID=1 backed up pool META.
Disaster, fire and the host has gone.

You build a new server, this server has a UUID=2. now when you get XOA back up and running and join this new server, the restore will NOT allow you to restore the backup to this host as it's looking to restore to UUID=1

All is not lost because if you go digging in the XOA datastore location you can find the backups.

you will find a meta.json and a data file. the data file is the pool backup that you can copy onto the host and use the XE restore command to restore it.

If you have more than one POOL in your XOA, these files can be read to identify the pool. (name, UUID, known IP address etc...)

Shame XOA doesn't ask the next question of restore to same pool or overwrite another.

      does that make sense?

    • RE: restoring META

@olivierlambert i get that but when i try (justed tried in testlab) it says it can't find the pool.
this / host, this i sbecause a new UUID has been created. how to you restore an existing pool to a new host pool (to overwrite it)

    • restoring META

If you have a backup of a pool META you can click the server and then restore.
What happens if you had to rebuild the server?

the UUID of the server will not be the same, how do you get the pool data from that pool back to that server?
