In "Storages => Local storage => Disks => Unmanaged disks" I have a handful of disks that seem to be old, however I can't seem to delete them. Is there a way to delete these? They seem to be using up disk space.

Those are likely "base copy". If it's the case, it's normal because they are "parents" of a VDI chain (snapshot, active disks etc.)

What you can probably safely remove are orphaned disks.

If I migrate a disk from local storage to an NFS virtual disk storage (VDS) on a NAS and then back to local storage, why is there a large amount of data left on the VDS on the NAS? Is this eventually deleted or can I clear the disk which is not being used or is it being used?

Just trying to understand how XCP-ng / Xen works.

It will be deleted after a garbage collector pass.

I didn't see any solution to remove the base copies. Please share if you have any.

You can't delete a base copy. You need to understand how it works before doing dangerous operations.

A base copy exists if there's a snapshot. If you have 0 snap and still base copy, it could be either:

                  • because the coalesce isn't finished
                  • because the coalesce doesn't work

In both case, you have to take a look at your SMlog. If you have no idea about it, you should either get pro support or start to read the doc in more details 🙂

                  You can start here: https://xcp-ng.org/docs/storage.html#coalesce
