Question: Will it be possible to Mirror a continuous replication repo?
      Thanks.

        Hi,

The target of a continuous replication is not a Backup Repository (BR), but a Storage Repository (SR). Mirror back is meant to replicate a BR, not a SR.

However, in theory, you could backup the SR having the VM copied by the cont. rep. It will be probably a question of getting the right timing.

Let me put @florent in the loop

Thank you. Food for thought! It's an exciting development. I look forward to @florent feedback.

As olivier said, you can use a standard backup job

I think it will be ok if the backup job doesn't run during the replication job ( like the replication job start at 0:00 for 2 hours , and then backup at 12:00). If both jobs occurs at the same time, the main risk is that the backup of the day will save the replicated VM of the previous job, thus giving a false feeling of security. Otherwise the backup should run fine , it may delay the coalescing of the snapshots.

It will make an additional snapshot on the replicated VM if you use an incremental backup, or rolling snapshot on the backup job.

Also the backed up VMs from this job will be blocked to start, you'll have to force start them after restoring

              Thank you.
What if I put a share on the continuous replication SR and make a remote out of it? Could I then mirror the SR as it will also appear as a remote? It would need to happen when continuous replication is not running.

@frank-s no, the storage format of the disk on a SR , and the disks on a backup repository is quite different. It's on flat folder on the hosts, but a hierarchy by vm/backup job/schedule/disk on the remotes

                You should test :

full or incremental replication from Storage Repository 1, to Storage Repository 2
Backup from Storage Repository 2 to Backup Repository (Remote)

I will consider that as a way forward.

@florent said in Mirror backup with Continuous Replication:

Backup from Storage Repository 2 to Backup Repository (Remote)

We are looking at a similar setup. We currently do continuous replication from one host to another host and then want to take a weekly backup off from SR2 effectively to a NAS.

Looking at one of these jobs, there is 31 days retention, and a fullbackup every 20 days. Is there a way I can match only the latest backup automatically so I can off-site just that to the NAS, and it come out as a full-backup, as I don't need to take 31 days worth, just the latest. I could adjust the full-backup interval perhaps to help with this and just take the most recent full backup although I don't think there is a tag for those?

SR2 on the second host also has live VM's running on it as well as being a CR target.

Or is there another way I can achieve this? I could take a backup directly from the running VM/SR1 direct to the NAS but I think that would interfere with the CR snapshot chain?

                    Thanks,

                    John
