Let’s say something happens and I lose my XO VM. Let’s also say my XO Config backups are unavailable. If I create a fresh XO install, will this XO be able to recognize VM backups created in the previous XO and restore them?

Yes, as long as you have a backup of the XO configuration, and ideally the metadata.

@DustinB Not even needed. If you just connect to a previously used backup repository, even a fresh XOA without any other config will be able to restore all the VMs.

Hrm, I've always just reattached to the backup repo so I could see everything. Must've been a misunderstanding on my part.

Having the XO configs and metadata makes the setup of a new XO way easier, just importing the config file reattaches to everything.

That's what I meant. Even a fresh XO without any previous config could restore backup if you add the backup repository at the same path where you had your backups before 🙂

Sure, it's even easier to restore XO metadata because you don't have to remember where are you backups, but still, worst case scenario (losing everything except the BR), it's possible to restore.
