XCP-NG 8.3 xsconsole backup, restore pool metadata
-
What happen to the XSCONSOLE backup restore and update function?
where is the pool metadata backup functions and schedules menu?why is this not mentioned in the deprecation notices here in the docs?
i am happy we did catch this before upgrading, anyway to get this function back? Why isn't the removed functionality available in XO lite?
Snicky this one from vates

@Prilly It is possible that this change came from the XS side. The following if from their Known Issues for CH 8.2 --
The backup and restore capability in xsconsole is temporarily not available. We are actively investigating a replacement solution. (CP-48776)
I don't view this as being sneaky or malicious on the part of Vates. Hopefully @stormi can shed some light on the subject.

@Danp Was working perfectly fine in 8.2.1 LTS
In xcp 8.3 xsconsole has got a revamp, i suspect this function was removed in this operation.
-
They removed it because of hard to fix security implications and plan to bring it back in a later update.

How do you restore this metadata backup in xcp-ng 8.3 without the use of XO?
This is absolutely something to write about in the release note of 8.3. when is it expected back?

Why would you not have XO running literally anywhere else with access to the pool so you could perform these operations if needed?

If you mean sneaky, I'm not sure I appreciate what this word implies.

Agreed, this should be in the release notes. I'll add it.
when is it expected back?
I had a look, and it was fixed on XenServer side. So it will be back in XCP-ng 8.3 once we rebase on their latest updates. Hopefully before the end of the year.

If you really can't use XO, you can use the same API that XO uses to implement the feature in its UI: XAPI. I don't know myself the exact end points that must be used for this back-up feature.

I think they may have actually meant to say sticky this one from Vates, they may have been hit by autocorrect, or are using sliding typing and didn't notice the mistake.

I can agree with you that my meaning of sneaky this time was not accounted for, at first glance my thought was this function was removed by intention by vates when the xsconsole was revamped to further push backup/restore options towards XO usage. I see now that i was wrong in that assumption!
-
We would have 0 interest to do this (even if the way it's done in XO is more secure than the console way), because.. XO is entirely free and open source. Forcing people to go to a free product instead another would not makes sense

It's now in the release notes: https://docs.xcp-ng.org/releases/release-8-3/#pool-metadata-backup-temporarily-unavailable-from-console
