migration from xen 7.2 to xcpng 8.2 with external storage
-
We have a xenserver 7.2 with external storage.
One of the VM have both local storage and external usb storage as disk attached to it.
If we migrate from xen 7.2 to xcpng 8.2, do we need to do anything special apart from normal upgrade that we do.Thanks in advance.

It's not a common scenario and I don't think we ever tested it, but it should work the same as an upgrade towards Citrix Hypervisor CU1 would.

@stormi Good afternoon Is it possible to live migrate virtual machines between a Citrix Xenserver 7.2 host and XCP-NG 8.2 during the pool upgrade process?
-
@OlegF I can't promise anything. It's designed to work, but sometimes, with such a big jump, VMs can crash. Especially if there are unfixed bugs in the sender host that manifest themselves only when migrating to some more recent versions (this happened in the past with cross pool migrations from XenServer <7.1 towards more recent pools).
-
@stormi Then how to safely migrate from Citrix Xenserver 7.2 (pool of 3 hosts with shared HBA SAS storage) to XCP-NG 8.2 ? ( RTFM ? )
-
@OlegF If you care about the safety during migration, you can try Vinchin Backup & Recovery. Although it can't help live migration but it lets you migrate VM by backing up the XenServer VMs and then directly restore them to XCP-ng. You don't have to worry about the failure during the process because you have VM backup and the production XenServer VMs can keep running during the process. You just need to switch the business to XCP-ng after you are sure the XCP-ng VM can perfectly work for you.

@Vanny Got it, thanks for the recommendation!

I assumed you wanted live migration, but if you can do with a few minutes of downtime, you can also do a warm migration: https://xen-orchestra.com/blog/warm-migration-with-xen-orchestra/

I recommend indeed Warm migration that doesn't need any 3rd party vendor tooling that are pushed by some shady accounts
