Backup copy jobs to S3
-
Hi everyone,
I want to test backup copy jobs for specific groups of backups, but I can't find how to set or limit backup copies for only a specific group of VMs. For instance, I want to set up offsite replication to S3 for a specific group of VMs based on their tags. How can I manage this?
Best regards,
Robin

Hi,
You can enable "smart mode" in your backup job.
-
@olivierlambert yes i am familiar with that function but in the copy section i do not have this option
maybe i am missing something here?
-
Because it's a mirror that will copy the entire BR/remote, without distinction. So you would like to replicate partially?
-
@olivierlambert yes indeed, we have customers that require us to copy backups for there vm's only to a secondary location, we don't want to send them backup data of other companies as well
-
@olivierlambert I think my post here applies with this as for one thing it would make ensuring backups for companies go to specific places, a lot easier. Tags may help but separating them based on tags can be a challenge, as they would need to be stored separately.
My post link below takes the request from @rtjdamen into account.

@john-c, it depends on how you manage your DC, but yes, I agree. Personally, I think tags would be the best option for us. However, this doesn't exclude any of the other possibilities.
So, I understand that this is currently not possible? That would be a bit problematic for me.

You have to configure multiple BR/remotes in order to do this so far, but it's pretty easy, just have one (for example) NFS share where you create subfolders for each customer, and then you can have a "customer per job" backup to 100% isolate everything logically. Note that you can automate that with our API/CLI.

@olivierlambert, that's not an ideal solution. We need to be able to select which backups/VMs need to be replicated and which do not. For instance, I can already separate them per customer based on your option, but it will still replicate everything to the second location for that customer. However, sometimes we only need to replicate one or two specific VMs. This is unmanageable for the total number of customers we have.

Then I would suggest to ask for the feature via your subscription, and we'll see if we can make it in a reasonable timeframe or if it will need a specific sponsored dev

@olivierlambert I will create u a list of things currenlty missing in XOA backups that are needed in the future to make the product perfect ;-), i will share it over email. Maybe we can help develop them but we need to discuss what is needed.

A good specification is always better to do things correctly (and to estimate the work needed)
