XCP-NG Slow VM vs Bare Metal
-
You clearly have an issue somewhere, Ubuntu should take few minutes to install on any decent hardware.
-
I have some other types of servers. That I will try out. I just dont want to reformat my threadrippers.
I will also put a Virtualbox on my Ubuntu BareMetals. We will see what we see.
-
Oh man I put the wrong youtube video my fault.
-
Any idea @fohdeesha ?
-
@zxcp Something is very broken - with customers and most users we typically see around ~90% of bare metal perfs (in things like passmark and real use). This is with modern virtualization using PVHVM - which is what most of the templates should default to if your hardware supports it. What hardware is this exactly? is it running the latest bios/firmware and you've ensured it has VT-D / IOMMU / etc enabled? In simple cases of poor virtualization overhead we may expect to see something like ~30% worse performance compared to bare metal, so maybe an 8 minute ubuntu install instead of 5. Three hours means something is very broken somewhere - could be storage related as well as installs are usually very write heavy. If you attach a
dmesg
from XCP-ng it should make it clear what your hardware supports virt wise -

@zxcp PowerEdge 1950 and R900 are far too old for virtualization with xen. This era of Xeons (more than 12 years old) are missing a ton of extensions that help with virtualization, with no IOMMU subsystem to be used by xen etc as you noticed in dmesg (I'm honestly surprised our installer even worked on these). The bare minimum I would consider for virtualization would be 11th gen dell stuff (R610, R710, etc)

@zxcp I run a HP DL360 G5 (E5450) that I use for testing (XCP 8.2.1). It's one step newer than yours but basically the same era (VT-x but no IOMMU). It works but without the needed features it is painfully slow.
VM disk IO is about 25MBytes/sec max. Networking is slow. CPU is slow. There is a noticeable delay just logging into a Linux VM or doing anything with it.
Installing XCP from iLO (remote management like DRAC) took hours. Booting and starting the system and VMs is ok for testing but not good for much else. It was a good (free) toy to play with but it does not run anything important on XCP.
I have some much newer (but still old) machines and they are just fine and have modern features in the hardware that XCP wants.
You should get some newer hardware for free or very cheap and the results will be much better.

Dell 1950 from before.I took a BareMetal and threw a Virtualbox in just for consideration. First, no one seems to have the DB aspect down just right. But Floating point was x5 vb over XCP. Although, XCP won in a lot of other aspects, so congraduwelldone.
I am not blaming. No fault. I get it.
We're just learning. I like xcp-ng product for my other servers just hoping this could lead to a small snippet of code that would keep the VM overhead loss to a minimum. Thanks all, I may still post new discovery if something comes of it.

CentOS virtualized on a UB install on Metal
CentOS (RAM Disk) virtualized on a UB install on Metal
CentOS virtualized on a XCP
I wanted to make sure there wasn't Big Edian Little issues but there are some interesting differences.

While old hardware may not be well-optimized, I have multiple HP Z800 Workstations that were running XenServer 7.2 and now XCP-NG 8.2 with zero issues. Dual hexacore 3.33GHz Xeon CPU's and 96GB RAM. Multiple Windows 10 guests with multiple linux guests on the same hosts. Drives are mapped to a NFS repository (absolutely nothing on local storage) across a 1Gb network backbone and I have pretty much no performance problems.
Disclaimer: I'm not running a corporate production data center here... It's a combination of home lab / home automation systems (including two Home Theater PC installs) along with my daily work client machines.

XCP-NG UBUNTU VM on a UBUNTU Docker
Somehow faster except Floating is more dead.

@zxcp -- Storage can be a big bottleneck, depending on what you have installed, the RAID configuration, individual disk performance limitations, network/fiber channel overhead, cache hit rates, etc. etc. I'd' run some storage benchmark, if nothing else, iostat to see what sort of performance stats you get and if the queue length, performance, or other metrics are maxing out. Also, for VMs, their distribution among VCPUs can make a difference (NUMA/vNUMA).
Also, a 2.0 GHz CPU is slow by modern standards and CPU performance will also affect storage performance. Do you have enough dom0 memory allocated (run top/xtop to check)? -
@ember1205 it's not a matter of not being "well optimized" or xen arbitrarily removing support for old CPUs (we don't do that), it's a matter of the CPUs he's using being so old they're missing entire instruction sets that are required for proper virtualization. The Z800 systems you mention use xeons a full generation newer than the processors he's using, and were the first intel xeon generation to have proper full IOMMU/VT-d/etc instruction set support, so of course I'm sure they worked just great. The Z800 line is the same xeon generation as the 11th gen dells I mentioned, which is why I stated that is the oldest I would comfortably use - any generations older than these (like the poweredges zxcp is using) are missing core instruction sets xen relies upon.
