WiFi controller not recognized during XCP-NG install
-
I have recently found myself with too much spare time on my hands (in between jobs at the moment), so I decided it was finally time to experiment with configuring an XCP-ng hypervisor on this spare laptop that I have.
It's a Lenovo T490s (Core I7, 16B RAM) with an Intel Wireless-AC 9560 wifi controller. The install boot image doesn't appear to recognize the controller, though.
I know, using wifi for a hypervisor's main network connection is not the most efficient, but how else am I going to experiment while binging old TV shows on my couch. LOL
Anyhow, can anyone point me to the best way to get this working? Do I need to build the kernel and/or install media from scratch? I can do that, but if there's an easier way, I'd rather start there.
thanks,

Hi!
That's⦠an interesting challenge
Outside the sake of doing science, is there any specific use case? (I'm thinking that Qubes OS might be more legitimate on a laptop than a server distro, but again, if it's just for tinkering, why not). But be advised, Wifi isn't really a good medium for a server thing. -
honestly... it's a "why not?" project. Plus, it will give me hands-on experience with working at the hyper-visor level.
I don't expect to get great performance out of it, although, I'm curious to see what I do get. LOL
I just need to get the wifi recognized and configured first. Is build-from-scratch the answer?

Good question, let's ask @Team-OS-Platform-Release

@rhkean
I used an old laptop for my very first XCP-ng server and ran into similar problems. I plugged a $5 USB network adapter into the laptop and used wired networking. It let me get to the fun parts faster. If you want to get wifi working, keep us posted!

Hi @rhkean,
You should first check that the hardware in question is supported by a driver in Linux 4.19, or possible to build out of tree for that kernel.
I'd think you will have more chances of success on a recent laptop with the upcoming XCP-ng 9

thanks @yann ,
I'll look into v9
-
@rhkean note we did not publish any build yet (there is code available, but I wouldn't advise anyone to jump on it yet
) -
@yann Is there any ETA for XCP-NG 9?

@hoehnp we're aiming at sharing a very first public version before end of year, but don't hope for it to be anything complete or stable
