Crashed XOA. Can't boot a clean XOA and use RESTORE because of REGISTRATION
-
Oh dear, this is what I feared when Vates added the registration limits. Now, if there is a problem with XOA then we can't install a new XOA in order to access backups... I suppose it is possible to register using a fake email.
EDIT: I was lucky. Had a backup exported as OVA and could re-import using xcp-ng center...
Still I think this is critical. There should be a ready-made appliance that allows restoring of backups without internet access.
-
I thought you could deploy a new appliance, connect to your back remotes, and restore metadata/backups from the new appliance even without a registered version. Is this not the case?
-
@biggen nope, which I found out the hard way. I'll be keeping a off-site backup as ova just in case from now on..
-
You can alawys rebind your new XOA to import backup in case of emergency. Before doing big claims, please double check
edit: Seriously, it's even in the doc Please make an effort next time. https://xen-orchestra.com/docs/license_management.html#rebind-xo-license

@olivierlambert So this option works without internet access?
-
No, like all registration/updates (even on XOA free) you need to have Internet access (at least to XO website). This is also needed to have our pro support.
-
@olivierlambert Perhaps you missed this portion of @S-Pam's post (emphasis added by me) --
There should be a ready-made appliance that allows restoring of backups without internet access.
-
Just think a bit of the consequences if that was possible We found a solution by design to avoid restore deadlocks (allow rebinding). That's the best we can do to be the less painful process than possible (no "product key" or license daemon, or whatever).
-
@olivierlambert I was stressed and overreacted a bit. I did not see the licensing thing immediately. All I saw was when clicking "Restore" that I needed to either upgrade or activate a free trial. I did "register" my applicance and got stuck at the license issue. - I could not use the trial and I could not use restore because of the "bind issue" which wasn't clear to me on that screen. - I could have looked further in the docs.
However, why is restore locked? You could lock everything else except restore on a fresh install. I don't think that would be an issue for abusing licensing terms etc.

It's not that easy to block some screens. But that's an interesting suggestion, I'll pass that to @pdonias
